Flo Health

Flo Health is the leading health and wellness mobile app for women with over 160 million users worldwide and available in in more than 20 languages. Currently, over 3 million African users are registered and almost 2 million use the system on a monthly basis. The system allows women to track and characterize various elements of their menstrual periods as well as symptoms and experiences in the rest of the cycle. Flo has developed a reputation for working with investigators at research universities in Australia and the United States for the performance of research regarding menstrual health and wellbeing.

The Flo app currently contains three elements that will be used for DatAUB and val-IDA-te. The first is menstrual tracking, a process that includes documentation of cycle length and variability as well as period duration and subjective menstrual volume recorded as light, moderate or heavy. The second element is a semi-objective method of estimating the volume of blood loss that is based on the pictorial blood loss assessment charts (PBAC) used in clinical research that uses icons depicting the appearance of menstrual products to estimate volume. The third component is a quality of life survey that acquires data from a "chatbot", a texting-like approach to obtaining the menses-related quality of life information.  In addition, the application will be modified to allow support for followup of women enrolled in the val-IDA-te pilot studies.
