The AWARrD Research Hub
The AWARrD Hub, that is intended to build data science capacity in Africa, will be based in Assiut University, Egypt and will serve to bring together clinicians, basic science investigators, and data scientists to foster the development of innovative solutions to womens' reproductive health issues, particularly those involving the uterus. The two main areas of AWARrD research interest are uterine fibroids (or leiomyomas) which are more common in African than Caucasian women and iron deficiency (ID) and iron deficiency anemia (IDA) the latter the major cause of the prevalence of about 40% in non- pregnant African women. The two data-intensive projects will be supported by a first-rate administrative core which will lead the Hub, maintain its organization and ensure that projects and other components will be supported to achieve the Hub objectives. Funding will be made available for at least two yearly subawards for short term pilot projects aligned with the AWARrD research focus. The data management and analysis core (DMAC) will be an integral component of the AWARrD Hub. The primary purpose of the DMAC is to support the management, integration, and interoperability of data across the Hub, including all current and future AWARrD research projects. We believe that the Hub will exist not just for the elite scientists, but it is hoped that it will also serve to meet the needs of African people at large.
